From the opening Act of the play, the audience is made aware of Hamlets tendency to muse on the nature of appearances and reality; he suspects and sees deception in everything and everyone, a tendency which is fostered by the circumstances within which he finds himself. Perhaps the earliest example of Hamlets mistrust of appearances is his judgement of his mother as crying unrighteous tears over the death of his father. The adjective unrighteous perhaps suggests her grief to be false and tainted by her oer hasty marriage to Claudius; Hamlet sees the outward manifestation of her grief i.e. the tears as a hollow pretense. This idea of outward appearances as a concealment is also reinforced when Hamlet talks of Claudius as a smiling, damned villain; the juxtaposition of the contradictory smiling and villain powerful ly expresses the ability of outward appearances to manipulate and distract from what is real. It has been noted that Shakespeares imagination was haunted by the image of the smiling villain; he used it to express the theme of deceptive appearances (for example, theres daggers in mens smiles (Macbeth)) As a response to the dishonesty surrounding Hamlet, throughout the play he frequently reflects on the nature of deception in the world, for example he claims that to be honest as this world goes, is to be one man picked out of ten thousand; Hamlet, and potentially Shakespeare, blatantly recognize deception within everyone and dishonesty as an innate human trait. Vindice, within The Revengers Tragedy makes an almost identical observation claiming that to be honest is not to be ithworld ; both characters belief in truth has been subdued by the duplicity surrounding them. In an almost vicious circle of deceit, both protagonists resign themselves to create elaborate disguises as a means to decipher what is real. For example, Vindice disguises himself as Piato in order to discover whether his mother and sister are truly pure or not: Ill put on that knave for once, the term put on is a reference to the disguise he will create. The appearance of Vindice attempting to seduce his mother and sister disguises the antithetical purpose of testing their virtue. Similarly, Hamlet resorts to deception on numerous occasions throughout the play. For example, he chooses to put on an antic disposition in order to distract people from realizing his true purpose, he blatantly deceives Ophelia when he claims I loved you not as he later expresses his overwhelming love for her: I loved Ophelia, forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum. In addition, to test the truth of the ghosts words: The play is the thing, wherein Ill catch the co nscience of the King; the play seems to be simply entertainment when, in reality, it is a trap, another classic facade and an example of something scheming and negative being obscured by a positive outward appearance. The use of the play within a play is very much reflective of the growing popularity of theater within Shakespeares Elizabethan context, although it was considered to be a bad influence by some. Many have argued that the lack of distinction between reality and what appears to be is taken to such an extent that the protagonist, on some occasions, appear to deceive himself. For example, he convinces himself that the ghost of his Father may not be real thus creating a delay in the killing of Claudius: The spirit that I have seen may be a devil. He also convinces himself not to kill Claudius whilst praying as this would send him to heaven. This perhaps presents yet another example of the differences between reality and what seems to be; Hamlet, on numerous occasions, claims to act according to a Christian moral guideline for example when he concludes not to kill himself as the everlastingfixed his canon gainst self-slaughter. However, the very act of revenge is blatantly atypical of someone abiding by Christian guidelines; turn the other cheek appears to be discarded. Perhaps Hamlets outward presentation of his morals is different from the reality of them. Towards the denouement of Hamlet it becomes clear to the audience that almost all of the major characters within the play have become entangled in the web of deception and this, in turn, leads to their death. Horatio is the only character left alive at the end of the play and the only one not involved in a deception of some kind; this perhaps suggests didactic intent on the part of Shakespeare. For example, Laertes is ultimately killed by the poisoned sword he intended for Hamlet: I am justly killed with mine own treachery. The adjective justly perhaps suggests this idea that deception and duplicity warrants punishment. Gertrude deceives her husband by keeping the truth of Hamlets sanity from him: I have no life to breathe what thou hast said to me; she ultimately dies. Polonius, throughout the play, enjoys the thrill of deceit; for example, he sends a spy to watch over his son. His death behind the arras is perhaps symbolic of his tendency for concealment leading to his death. Claud ius is coupled with a duplicitous nature from his entrance into the play; he conceals his secret behind the facade of a good, honest king and proves to be, as Hamlet observed a smiling villain. For example, he demonstrates an artificial concern for the kingdom by using collective pronouns such as our dear brother and our hearts. He boasts an insincere grief over the death of his brother: brow of woe and consistently claims to act in the interests of the kingdom, for example he sends Hamlet away as his liberty is full of threats to all. However, his intentions are ultimately selfish- he claims he acted for his crown, (his) own ambition, and (his) queen. In a similar way to Shakespeare, Middleton ultimately ends the play with the execution of Vindice, who carries out the greatest deceit: bear em to speedy execution. However, whereas within Hamlet the principle characters ultimately die as a result of their deception and dishonesty, Vindice dies as a result of revealing his deception: twas we two murdered him. The truth ultimately condemns Vindice where deceit itself condemns the characters in Hamlet. In conclusion, throughout both Shakespeares Hamlet and Middletons The Revengers Tragedy, the differences between how things seem and how they really are are constantly explored. The protagonist within Hamlet is depicted as besieged by pretense which, in turn , leads him to create his own elaborate charades to distinguish between truth and deception. This capacity for deception he shares with The Revengers Tragedys Vindice. Almost all of the principle characters within Hamlet ultimately boast dual personalities or concealed motifs demonstrating to an audience the differences between how things or characters seem to be and how they truly are.

You probably aren’t thinking war hero or military genius, but according to historian Steve Sheinken, that’s just what Benedict Arnold was until†¦Well, you’ll get the rest of the story when you read this marvelous  nonfiction book The Notorious Benedict Arnold  about the early life, high adventures, and the tragic  end to an infamous icon. The Story: The Early Years He was a sixth generation Benedict Arnold born into a wealthy New Haven, Connecticut family in 1741. His father, Captain Arnold, owned a lucrative shipping business and the family enjoyed an elite lifestyle. Benedict, however, was an unruly child and difficult to control. He often got into trouble and refused to follow rules. Hoping he would learn respect and some discipline, his parents sent him away to a boarding school when he was eleven, but this did little to  cure his wild ways. Economic hardships turned the Arnold’s fortunes to ruin. His father’s shipping business suffered greatly and creditors were demanding their money. Arnold’s father was jailed for not paying his debts and he quickly turned to drinking. No longer able to afford the boarding school, Benedict’s mother had him return. Now a teenager the rebellious boy was humiliated when he had to deal publicly with his drunken father.  A grim determination settled over Benedict who vowed to never be poor or suffer humiliation again. He focused his attention on learning business and become a successful tradesman himself.  His ambition and reckless drive brought him great success and helped prepare him to become a fearless military man when he threw his support in favor of the American Revolution. The Story: Military Success and Treason Benedict Arnold did not like the British. He did not like the taxes imposed on his business. Headstrong and not always waiting for instruction, Arnold would organize his own militia and march into battle before Congress or even General Washington could intervene. He boldly engaged in what some soldiers called â€Å"chaotic combat† but always managed to come out of the battle successful. One British official commented on Arnold saying, â€Å" I think he has shown himself the most enterprising and dangerous man among the rebels. (Roaring Book Press, 145). Arnold is credited with turning the tide of the American Revolution with his success at the Battle of Saratoga. However, problems started when Arnold felt  he wasn’t getting the recognition he deserved. His pride and inability to get along with other military officers branded him a difficult and power hungry individual. As Arnold began to feel unappreciated he turned his loyalties to the British and began a communication with high ranked British officer named John Andre. The treasonous plot between the two, if successful, would have changed the outcome of the American Revolution.  A series of coincidental and perhaps fateful events resulted in revealing the dangerous plot and changing the course of history. The Author: Steve Sheinkin Steve Sheinkin is a textbook writer by profession with a long held interest in the story of Benedict Arnold.  Admittedly obsessed with Benedict Arnold, Sheinkin spent years researching his life in order to write the adventurous tale. Writes Sheinkin, â€Å"I’m convinced it’s one of the best action/adventure tales in American History. (Roaring Book Press,  309). Sheinkin has written several historical books for young readers including King George: What was His Problem?  and Two Miserable Presidents. The Notorious Benedict Arnold is the 2012 winner of the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults and also recognized with the 2011 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction. The book is also listed on School Library Journal’s  Best Children’s Books of 2010and is on the Horn Book Magazine’s Fanfare List, Best of 2010. (Source: Macmillan) My Recommendation: The Notorious Benedict Arnold The Notorious Benedict Arnold is a nonfiction book that reads like an adventure novel.  From his wild boyhood pranks to his manic battlefield heroics to the ultimate act that would brand him a notorious traitor, Benedict Arnold’s life was anything but dull. He was fearless, reckless, prideful, greedy, and one of George Washington’s favorite military leaders. The irony is that if Arnold had actually died while engaged in battle, it’s quite possible he’d have gone down in the history books as one of the heroes of the American Revolution, but instead his actions branded him a traitor. This nonfiction read is extremely engaging and detailed. Sheinkin’s impeccable research weaves together a fascinating narrative of the life of a very interesting man. Using many resources including several primary documents such as journals, letters,  and memoirs, Sheinkin recreates battle scenes and relationships that help readers understand the events leading up to Arnold’s decision to betray his country. Readers will be fascinated by this story that is a play by play account of events whose final outcome could have changed the course of American history.   Although the publisher recommends this nonfiction middle grade book for readers 11-14, I consider it a young adult book because  of its  mature themes of war, death,  and betrayal. Sheinkins book is a first rate example of in depth and credible research and is an excellent introduction on how to use primary documents when writing a research paper.(Roaring Book Press, 2011. We believe that most serious crimes deserve the most serious punishment, as we recall the statement from the Old Testament, An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, principle. When we hear about a murderer, rarely do we want to understand what drove him to murder; more often, we wish to kill him. It is difficult to understand that the vengefulness we feel toward a murderer, which drives us to champion execution, is identical to the wish for revenge the murderer feels for what he believes to be the horrendous injustices in his life. Our desire to tame the heart of the murderer is quite limited. We feel as murderous toward them as they do toward those they have killed. We wish either to kill or torture them. This makes a murderer, if he is imprisoned, even more murderous. Just as the murderer's murder accomplishes nothing, so too the death penalty has not in any way decreased murder. The judicial system was created in hopes of providing justice for all people. Although movements such as Civil Rights and Black Power have taken place to ensure justice for all, discrimination still exists in our judicial system. Capital Punishment is applied in an unfair, arbitrary and discriminatory manner. As long as it remains a part of our penal system, it will be used disproportionately against the poor, racial minorities, and those who had received inadequate legal representation. Even under the most sophisticated death penalty statutes, race continues to play a major role in determining who shall live and who shall die. Justice Harry Blackmun Throughout American history, the death penalty has fallen disproportionately on racial minorities. From 1930, the first year for which statistics are readily available from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, to 1967, 3,859 persons were executed under civil jurisdiction in the United States. During this period of nearly half a century, over half (54%) of those executed were black, 45 percent were white, and the remaining one percent were members of other racial groups (see fig. 1). Between 1930 and 1976 nearly 90% of those executed for the crime of rape in this country were African-Americans . Between 1930 and 1996, 4220 prisoners were executed in the U.S.; more than half (53%) were black . Currently, about 50% of those on the nations death rows are from minority populations representing 20% of the country's population. In 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned existing death penalty statutes in part because of the danger that those being selected to die were chosen out of racial prejudice. Legislatures adopted the death sentencing procedures that were supposed to eliminate the influence of race from the death sentencing process. That was one of the grounds on which the Supreme Court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in Furman. However, evidence of racial discrimination in the application of capital punishment continues. Nearly 40% of those executed since 1976 have been black, although blacks constitute only 12% of the population. And in almost every de ath penalty case, the race of the victims is white (see fig. 2). Understanding the ACT scoring system can give you a huge leg up as you set goals and make a study plan. Read on to learn how the ACT is scored, section by section, with official ACT scoring charts. We also include our five top strategies related to ACT scoring so you can use this information to your advantage. Overview of ACT Scoring So how is the ACT scored? The ACT has four sections, sometimes called subject areas: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Each subject area is given a scaled score between 1 and 36. Those area scores are then averaged into your composite score, which also ranges between 1 and 36. So where do those scaled scores come from? The scaled scores from 1 to 36 are converted from your raw scores on each of the subject areas. Your raw score is simply the total number of questions you answer correctly in each section. There is no point deduction for wrong answers on the ACT. How Are Raw ACT Scores Turned Into Scaled Scores? The first thing to understand about ACT scores is that the score you get for each subject area, between 1 and 36, is a scaled score. That scaled score is converted from your raw score. The reason the ACT (as well as other standardized tests) uses scaled scores is to make sure their scores are consistent across multiple test dates. In other words, they have to make sure a 28 on an April ACT represents the same level of skill as a 28 on a June ACT. Scaling is not curving your score relative to the scores of other students who take the test the same day as you.What scaling does is analyze average scores for each version of the ACT to ensureno test date is easier or harder than another. To recap, we know that you get a score of between 1 and 36 for each subject area, which is converted from your raw score. But how do those four area scores combine to your final composite score? Your composite score is simply the average of your four area scores, rounded up to the nearest whole number (half a point or more is rounded up, less than half a point is rounded down). For example, say you got a 24 on the Math section, 23 on Science, 26 on Reading, and 25 on English. Your composite score would be: (24 + 23 + 26 + 25) / 4 = 24.5 This would be rounded up to 25. What Are the ACT Subscores? In addition to your main composite score and your four subject area scores, the ACT also gives you subscores in three of the four subject areas. English, Math, and Reading all have subscores, which give you more information about your strengths and weaknesses in each subject. Subscores range from 1 to 18, and they are also scaled from your raw score. However, there is no direct relationship between your subscores and your final scaled score (for example, your subscores do not add up to your scaled score). English The English section of the ACT has 75 multiple-choice questions, meaning the highest raw score you can earn is 75. Remember that your raw score is just the total number of questions you answer correctly. Questions you leave blank or answer incorrectly are simply not added on to your raw score. In addition to the four subject areas, it's also possible to take the ACT with an additional writing section. The writing section is not another multiple-choice section – it’s just the ACT with an essay added on. So how is the essay scored, and how will it affect your composite score?Your essay will be evaluated by two graders, who score your essay from 1-6 on each of four domains, leading to scores out of 12 for each domain. Your Writing score is calculated by averaging your four domain scores, leading to a total ACT Writing score from 2-12. Next, the ACT will combine your essay score with your English and Reading sections score and average them to give you an English/Language Arts subscore between 1 and 36. Read on for our top five suggestions. #1: Hide a Weak Subject Since the ACT is averaged, not totaled, and there are four sections, you can "hide" a weak section more easily than on the SAT, which has three sections and totals your score. For example, say you struggle with math and got the following subject area scores on the ACT: Reading: 30 English: 29 Science: 31 Math: 22 While you might think your math score is going to drag down your composite, since it is only one-fourth of your score, its effect isn’t huge: (30 + 31 + 29 + 22) / 4 = 28 So even though your math score was a lot lower than the other three sections, you still come out with a 28 (which is, by the way, a 90th percentile score). While we are not recommending you don’t study for a certain section because it’s only one-fourth of your total ACT score, it is helpful to know that each subject area’s score will not make or break your composite. #2: Maximize Your Composite Score Since the composite is averaged, you should work to maximize your subject area scores that you are strong in as well as working to minimize weaknesses. Just focusing on trying to fix your weak spots could actually cause you to miss out on points. For example, say you have always excelled in English and history classes but struggle with math. You might think you should spend all of your ACT studying time drilling math problems. However, working to maximize your strengths – in this case reading and writing – could improve your score the most. Let’s take two scenarios. In the first, you spend all of your time studying for the math section and get the following scores: English: 28 Reading: 27 Math: 25 Science: 26 Composite: 27 Not bad! You got your math score up to a 25, which is just about the 80th percentile, and got a composite of 27, which is in the 87th. But what would have happened if you had spent some time on English and Reading and less time on math? Getting just five more raw points on both the English and Reading sections could have a huge boost to your score. If those are personal strengths, picking up five points should be easy with some smart studying. So let’s say you spend some time on English and Reading and earn five more raw points on each section, and less time on math: English: 33 Reading: 32 Math: 23 Science: 26 Composite: 29 So even if you got a lower score on math, the time spent studying on English and Reading could net you two higher section scores as opposed to just one, resulting in a higher composite. #3: Develop Target Raw Scores Using the ACT’s raw score to scaled score estimates, you can develop target raw scores for each section. This makes studying easier – thinking in terms of raw points is simpler when you are working through practice problems. For example, say you want to break a scaled score of 26 in each section. Looking at the raw-to-scaled-score table, you should aim for at least the following raw scores: English: 60/75 Reading: 31/40 Math: 43/60 Science: 30/40 Now this suggests a strategy - skipping questions. For example, if you're aiming for a raw score of 43 in Math, you can actually completely skip the last ten hardest questions (by bubbling in a random answer) and attempt 50 questions. This gives you more time per question, increasing the chance you will get more of them correct. Plus, even if you still miss seven of them, you'll get your raw score of 43! #4: Guess on Every Single Question - Leave No Bubble Unbubbled Since there is no guessing penalty on the ACT, the best way to maximize your score is to eliminate wrong answer choices and guess. We are not saying to rush through each section in order to answer every single question – as we saw above, you might have a target raw score that’s much lower than the total points possible. In that case, it makes sense to spend more time focusing on fewer questions. What this means is that if you do spend time on a question, even if you are not totally sure of the answer, it’s the best use of your time to eliminate some answer choices to give yourself the best shot at guessing the right answer. Furthermore, when the proctor says there is one minute remaining, go ahead and bubble every blank answer you have remaining. Even if you haven't looked at the question in the book, you aren't losing anything by guessing. You might pick up a raw point or two on each section this way, which can have a surprising effect on your scaled score, as we have seen. Try not to leave any blanks! #5: Understand How the Essay Affects Your Score If you take the ACT with Writing, you'll receive a composite plus your essay score. However, this doesn’t mean the essay should become the biggest priority on your study plan. Your subject area scores and composite score are the most important aspects of the ACT, so you should prioritize studying for the multiple-choice sections. For most colleges, your essay score is the least important part of your ACT score. This means that a low essay score may not have much of a negative impact on your applications if your composite ACT score is high.
